Further north is Gray built on the banks of the river Saône. Gray was once a thriving port for wine and wheat.
To the south Dole, situated on the river Doubs, is the ancient capital of Franche Comté and the city where Louis Pasteur was born, which has a green market three days a week.
To the east, just 45 minutes drive from Marpain, lies Besançon, the present capital of Franche Comté. Besançon is encircled by the river Doubs and offers history and art.
To the west, also just 45 minutes drive from Marpain, is Dijon, the capital of Burgundy.
